10 Places To Find Content Inspiration

Grow Your Business

Have you ever sat down at your computer to write a blog post only to find yourself still staring at a blank screen an hour later?

You probably already know this but content is king. Without high-quality content, it is hard to build and maintain an audience. It’s even harder to turn that audience into lead or sales. So what do you do when it seems your creative juices have decided to take a vacation?

Well first, don’t panic. Finding ideas for good content can trip up even the most seasoned blogger.

Second, you can use this list of resources to find a steady stream of content ideas and build out an amazing content calendar and knock your audiences socks off.

My top 10 places to find blog content ideas and inspiration to help you create stellar posts your audience loves.

Some of the links in this post may contain affiliate links. That means if you purchase from the link I may receive a small commission. I only recommend products that I absolutely love and stand behind.

My Favorite Places To Find Blog Content Ideas

I am going to give my absolute fave resources to find inspiration for blog posts. By I would be remiss if I didn’t mention this one VERY important thing…

Use the resources for inspiration, not to copy other peoples work. Find topics that relate to your specific niche but please put your own spin on that content.

Now that that is out of the way lets look at the 10 places I go when I need some inspiration.

Pinterest

If you have spent any amount of time researching the best places to promote your blog posts and drive traffic to your website, then you have heard of Pinterest. Pinterest is the second largest search engine and responsible for over 80% of my own web traffic. But it is also a great place to find inspiration for your blog posts.

With over 75 billion pins for all types of content, a simple search can yield a year’s worth of content easily.

How I Use Pinterest

I spend a lot of time on Pinterest daily trying to figure out the algorithm and how best to promote my own content. Which means I see a lot of pins that my audience would be interested in. When I find a pin on a topic I’d like to cover I save it to a secret board titles “Blog Topic Ideas”. When I am struggling to find a weekly topic I can easily reference that board.

BuzzSumo

Okay, BuzzSumo is just amazing! There’s no way around it. If you have never used BuzzSumo let me tell you… get over there today and check it out. BuzzSumo is a website where you plug in a search term and it reveals the blog posts that are the most popular. By popular I mean the posts getting shared on social networks the most.

Why is this beneficial to you? Because these topics have been proven to perform. Now, this also has to do with the quality of the content. Remember content is King.

How I Use BuzzSumo

I visit BuzzSumo at least once a week whether I need blog post ideas or not. This way I can see what’s going in my little world of the interwebs. I always write down any topic ideas or save them to Evernote so I can see them later.

Google Search

Google is the top dog of search engines and it’s also an amazing place to get blog post ideas. Want to know what the most popular searches are for your niche? Just check Google.

Google is a very intuitive search engine. Anytime you start typing in the search bar Google starts trying to figure out what you’re looking for based on other popular searches containing that keyword.

How I Use Google

As I mentioned above Google brings up a drop box of popular searches based on the keywords your type. So I write down all those “Broad” topics. If one catches my fancy and I want to see a more detailed list of blog post ideas I hit search and see what Google brings up for the top pages. BAM! Instant content ideas.

Reddit

I think Reddit deserves a mention on this list because I have found some great blog post inspiration from this site. Like BuzzSumo a search will return popular content from all over the web. And it can be a great source of inspiration.

Word of caution… use long tail keywords (small business branding versus just branding) because that will give the best results for your niche.

How I Use Reddit

Because Reddit works best with long tail keywords I will plug those into the site once I have narrowed down from a broad topic. This allows me to see what’s happening on the web around that keyword string. This gives me just a little more insight into my audience.

HubSpot Topic Generator

This is new to my blog post inspiration list but I have quickly fallen in love. HubSpot is a free CRM (customer relationship management) website that allows you to track your leads. But it also has some fantastic free resources including the HubSpot Blog Ideas Generator.

Just plug in three topics you’d like to cover on your blog and the generator will return a week’s worth of blog posts you can use.

How I Use HubSpot Topic Generator

This is a new resource for me but being able to churn out 5 blog post topics in mere seconds is super handy. I have used this tool several times now and I am super impressed with the ideas it can magically generate.

Facebook Groups

Facebook is, of course, the number one social media site in the world. But it is so much more than a place to share an inside look at your life and business.

Facebook groups, especially the ones where your target audience hangs out, are a wonderful place to see what’s on peoples minds and what pain points they have

How I use Facebook Groups

I am a member of several Facebook groups. Once a week I do a search in my top groups (the ones my audience hangs out in most) for keywords that are related to my niche. Facebook then brings up all the threads that contain that keyword. This gives me an inside look at peoples pain points and how I can best solve them.

Quora

Quora is a question and answer website. You can ask questions and people from all over will help you answer that question. Are you seeing a trend yet?

Anytime someone asks a question that is within your area of expertise it shows a pain point that they need help with. So answering those questions with great blog posts helps increase your authority and bring people to your website.

How I Use Quora

Quora is filled with people looking for answers to question that you can answer for them. So I do a quick search for keywords and see what the most popular questions are. Then I write that question down and can write a blog post that answers that question at a later date.

Popular Blogs

Every niche has its most popular blogs and you can get ideas for blog post topics from those blogs. That does not mean you copy your competition. This your opportunity to see how best approach certain topics.

How I Use Popular Blogs

I never visit anyone’s blog to directly copy their work. That would be dishonest and not my style. But I do read many blogs in my niche and I use them to help me understand which types of blog posts my audience wants to see. This is how I determine if I will use a list post, like this one, or do a how to post.

Email Newsletters

I don’t know about you but I have a lot of people I want to keep up with so I subscribe to their emails to stay in the know. Email newsletters can cover a broad array of topics and a great way to find inspiration to get out of your comfort zone.

Again, this isn’t to copy your competition or another blogger’s hard work but to inspire you around new topic ideas.

How I Use Email Newsletters

Occasionally I will receive an email for another blogger that I find inspiring. Usually, it’s a topic I wouldn’t normally cover but I know that my audience would love to hear about. So I add that topic to my running list and will research it later for a blog post. If you get inspiration from another blogger it’s always nice to mention them and thank them for inspiring you. There’s nothing wrong with sending a little love to a fellow blogger.

Asking Your Audience

This one should go without saying but sometimes we forget that the best place to find inspiration for content comes directly from those we want to help most. Whether you ask your email list, create a poll on Facebook, or ask current clients this is hands down the best place to get blog post ideas.

How I Use My Audience

When I need blog post ideas this is the first place I turn. I will review any emails I have received and look for questions I can answer. I will look at blog comments to see if there are any topics I can expand on. And I have also created a poll or two to gauge audience interest around certain topics or to find their pain points.

As you can see content ideas can come from anywhere around you. This is only a small resource list but in my opinion, these are the absolute best place to find inspiration when you need it most. So the next time you find yourself staring at a blank screen just use one of these to quickly find content.

Did I leave any off that you think should be included in the list? If so let me know down below in the comments.

  8. As always – great content here! For BuzzSumo, what type of topics do you key in? For example, my niche is Interior Design so if I were searching most popular blogs, what should I be searching?

    Reply
    • Thank you, Erin. When I use Buzz Sumo I start with a broad topic to see what comes up so start with something like “interior design”. Once you see what’s popular you can pick a keyword or two from those top post. So if you see the word “farmhouse” come up in an article maybe do a search of “Farmhouse Interior Design”. See what’s popular in that search. It could lead you to do a list post on your favorite Farmhouse decor with a modern flair. Or how to incorporate Farmhouse pieces into your modern/Scandinavian home. I hope that helps… I Did a search for “farmhouse Interior Design” on BuzzSumo and these were just a few ideas I came up with. Mainly because I watched Fixer Upper last night.

  19. Love this! I find it interesting that you use Pinterest and you have a secret board for blog ideas. Very cool.

    Reply
    • I keep it secret because it has a lot of repeat pins in it. If I find a topic of interest I usually save it to my “secret” board and then also save it to a public board. That is way there aren’t a lot of repeat pins. My secret board is also full of many topics, maybe even a stray slow cooker recipe here and there. I try and keep my public boards on topic and organized but my ideas board is a complete mess of pins. LOL. I think most of my topic ideas come from BuzzSumo rather than Pinterest but it’s nice to have a place I can scan to see if there’s something that pops out at me as a good topic I should be covering for you all.
